Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful storm of the 2025 Atlantic season, made landfall in Jamaica Tuesday as possibly its worst storm in recorded history.
Jamaica is bracing for what is feared could become the worst storm to hit the Caribbean nation in history. Hurricane Melissa was upgraded to a category five hurricane early on Monday, and could bring devastation to much of the country wth 165 mph winds and “catastrophic” flooding.
Despite being in a rather active region for tropical activity, the country has experienced no landfalls greater than Category 3 in the modern record. Hurricane Charlie in 1951 is considered the worst natural disaster for the country during modern times.
These storms are the most intense that the Earth can produce. Melissa, Humberto and Erin were added to the list of rare storms in 2025.
